Historic pub in London

The "The Ship Tavern" in London, England, is a historic pub that has been in operation since 1549, making it one of the oldest establishments in the city. Located in the Holborn district, near the peaceful Lincoln’s Inn Fields, it combines an impressive past with the charm of a traditional British alehouse. The venue has a rich history: during the Reformation in the 16th century, it served as a secret refuge for Catholic priests and a site for forbidden masses, and later it became a meeting place for Freemasons in the 18th century, where they consecrated their Lodge No. 234. For over 20 years, it has been run by the Evans family, who focus on high-quality, homemade British pub cuisine and a warm atmosphere. It is a place that attracts both locals and tourists looking to experience an authentic piece of London.

Traditional British pub cuisine

The interior of the Ship Tavern is truly eye-catching. The ground floor features the main bar area with worn oak floors, cozy nooks, and an ambiance that evokes days gone by. Particularly in winter, an open fireplace provides a comforting warmth, while candlelight bathes the mahogany walls in a soft glow. The first floor houses the Oak Dining Room, a quiet dining area with Dickensian charm, perfect for a relaxed meal. The historical substance of the building—extensively renovated in 1923—is preserved through details like old advertising signs and a loving restoration, making the pub a true gem. The atmosphere is lively but not overly loud, making it ideal for sociable gatherings or a quiet dinner.

Authentic piece of London experience

Culinarily, the Ship Tavern is known for classic British pub dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. A highlight is the Sunday Roast, featuring tender roast beef or juicy lamb, served with fluffy Yorkshire puddings and rich gravy— a dish that perfectly captures British tradition. The Beef and Ale Pie, a hearty pie filled with slow-cooked beef in a savory beer sauce, is often praised for its intense flavor and crispy crust. Fish lovers rave about the Cod and Chips, where the cod is fried in a light, crispy batter and served with thick chips. For vegetarians, options like the Mushroom Risotto, with its creamy texture and earthy flavor, are available. To conclude on a sweet note, the Sticky Toffee Pudding, a warm dessert topped with sweet caramel sauce, delights the palate.

Coziness at Ship Tavern

The drinks menu is equally impressive, reflecting the establishment's passion for British brewing traditions. It features a variety of real ales that change regularly and often come from local breweries, as well as an impressive selection of gins, including house-made creations. Particularly popular is the Ship Tavern Gin, a refreshing drink that is perfect for a relaxing evening. The cocktail menu offers creative options, while wine and beer lovers will also find something to enjoy. For those who do not drink alcohol, there is a selection of high-quality non-alcoholic beverages that complete the experience.

Friendly service at the pub

Service at the Ship Tavern is described as warm and attentive, with staff placing great importance on making guests feel welcome. Even on busy days, such as Sundays when the roast is the centerpiece, the service remains friendly and efficient. Reservations are recommended, especially for the dining room, as the pub can quickly fill up due to its popularity. The team is known for accommodating individual requests and sweetening guests' stays with small gestures, such as a smile or a friendly chat.

Such a wonderful and hospitable pub! Our waitress Meg was lovely, friendly and very accommodating of our groups food restrictions. We had an amazing dinner after an afternoon of sightseeing. Make sure to stop by on your next trip to London for the quintessential pub experience

This is supposedly the oldest tavern in London. The fish and chip is made from a whole filet of fresh cod. Quite good. Better than all the fish and chips I’ve tried in London. The meat pie was delicious also. Skip the burger; just ordinary.

Brought my sister here so she could taste the Sunday roast. Booked a table for 2pm, got seated at 2.40 and finally served at 4.15. Service was too slow. Food was excellent but at the time we had it we were starving

We came as a group of 9 people, to show our friends who were visiting from Canada to lovely Sunday roast. As we walked in, we were walked upstairs to our beautifully set table, in the restaurant. The waiter (Ali) could not have been more helpful and attentive. The beef wellington was and absolute treat and the Pinot Noir was delightful. All is the stunning and traditional settings the pubs has worked so hard to retain over the year. Another exceptional experience at the Ship tavern. See you guys again soon.

It was the 3rd time we returned to this lovely pub. The vibe is cosy and authentic yet quite elegant. Just like the food, you get the classic pub dishes with a twist as well as some other options. The hardest bit was to decide what to get! Just wanted to add a special thank you to the team who accommodated us with a table downstairs when booked upstairs as my father is disabled and how lovely and smiley was our waitress today. Ensuring we were 1000% happy with our food and drinks. If it’s not the cheapest pub in London, the price is actually really reasonable for the quality of the food, the size of the portions and all the details that make a great authentic pub. I recommended it and will return soon!

Lovely scenic pub, shame we were rudely and begrudgingly served a pint of discoloured soda-water followed by a lager when requesting a single southern comfort and lemonade and an ale. Overcharged massively for this order. No communication with bar staff, they were dismissive, shame that such a beautiful pub is ruined by terrible service. No doubt down to some sleazy management, feel sorry for these employees.

Venerable boozer frequented by individuals from all walks of life. Visited on a bright but cold evening in Feb 2025. The pork scratchings stored in a warmed case is an exciting and rarely seen touch for £4. Bar staff are friendly and helpful (were happy to help with a glass of water for a bouquet of flowers). Glasses of Prosecco for £7.50 each are a good price point, even if I wasn’t that much of a fan of the actual Prosecco itself (nobody’s fault but mine). Restrooms are tidy, with posh hand soaps , although the hand driers are rather deafening. Just be aware the lighting can be rather dim (in keeping with the 16th century theme).

Such a great spot for a pub lunch in central London. I usually find pub food can be a bit lacking but every meal was great. We booked as a big group of 9 and the upstairs dining room is so lovely, and the team are very friendly. We had great service and everyone enjoyed their meals. The portions were big and super filling. The burgers & pot pies (both beef and chicken) were favourites from our table - but some British classics like beef wellington and venison all looked great, would definitely come back again!

A really lovely hidden away pub just around the corner from Holborn Underground Station. The food is very nice, the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is lively. A pub I would definitely recommend! ☆☆☆☆☆
